When the Internet exposes lies and false trust

Do you remember when James Frey, author of the supposed non-fiction book, A Million Little Pieces, was publicly chastised in front of millions of viewers by television host Oprah Winfrey for fabricating details of his book and misrepresenting the truth? It turns out that a web site was the original force that's been cited as leading Oprah Winfrey to openly criticize Frey, whose book she had once endorsed for Oprah's Book Club. This Smoking Gun article is alleged to have been the spark that led to the reversal of Winfrey's perspective on Frey and his book.

Knowledge@Wharton has an interesting article that contrasts how Winfrey was able to recover successfully from her poor choice of endorsement and restore viewers' broken trust for her, whereas Frey handled the situation much less admirably.
